CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte and partner agencies activated extreme weather protocols Sunday, Dec. 14, as winter weather and extreme cold were forecast.

Protocols will remain in effect at least through the morning of Monday, Dec. 15.

The activation increases shelter capacity and outreach to support people experiencing homelessness during the severe cold. Agencies working together include the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office (CMEMO), Roof Above, the Salvation Army Center of Hope, and the Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte Coalition. Officials said they will continue to monitor weather and shelter needs throughout the period.
