Abraham Quintanilla, the father of legendary singer-songwriter Selena Quintanilla, has died at 86. His son, record producer A.B. Quintanilla III, announced the death in an Instagram post on Saturday.
Details on Quintanilla's passing, including a cause of death, have yet to be made available to the public.
Quintanilla was the manager for Selena and her band, Selena y Los Dinos. In fact, Quintanilla formed the band in the early 1980s with A.B. on bass guitar and his other daughter, Suzette Quintanilla, on drums. The group would perform at quinceañeras, street corners, family gatherings and eventually a Mexican restaurant Quintanilla opened in Lake Jackson, Texas. They blended Mexican and American musical styles beautifully through the genre of Tejano.
Selena began performing for the first time in public at the restaurant, Papágayos, at age 9. Quintanilla recognized her talent instantly, telling People back in 1995 that "her timing, her pitch were perfect" from the moment she took the stage.
It wasn't long before Selena became a bona fide star as a solo act, as she won Female Vocalist of the Year 11 times at the Tejano Music Awards and collected the Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album in 1994. The Grammys honored Selena with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
Selena's career came to a tragic end, however, in March 1995 as she was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of her fan club.
Five years ago, Quintanilla told People he was "going to try to keep [Selena's] memory alive through her music." Quintanilla has certainly done that for Selena, and since he helped lay the foundation for her incredible career, his legacy will live on with hers.
