Buxton National Historic Site and Museum received a significant designation recently, as it was officially accepted into the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom through the U.S. National Park Service.
Founded in 1849 as the Elgin Settlement, it became one of the final stops on the network, where freedom seekers could own land, attend school and build community.

Noting the recognition affirms what the community has long known, the museum stated in a social media post: “Buxton is a place of courage, resilience, and legacy, a sanctuary built by freedom seekers and their descendants that continues to inspire generations.”
This designation places Buxton among an international network of sites committed to preserving Underground Railroad history.
