As I’ve often shouted, “Nurse!” in this space — hey, I write “in space!” — I’ve never designated what kind of nurse. I’d prefer one schooled to be a practical nurse, as an impractical nurse might be worse than my need, as a matter of practicality, of course.

The practical in our sports is too often lost to the overly technical.

Two Sundays ago, after the Patriots’ ironically named LB Christian Elliss blasted Giants QB Jaxson Dart out of bounds as an act of excessive, dangerous, antipersonnel sport that was technically legal, it was a matter of practicality that such by-the-book legality should be illegal.

After all, Dart was running out of bounds — running is now known as “using his legs” — Elliss could have as easily done the trick and diminished physical risk to both Dart and himsel
