President Trump is vowing retaliation after three U.S. military personnel — two Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter — were killed on Saturday by a suspected Islamic State attacker who targeted a convoy of American and Syrian forces, the U.S. military said.
Three other U.S. soldiers were wounded, the U.S. military's Central Command said.
The attack comes at a time when the U.S. and Syria’s new government, led interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, are seeking closer relations more than a year after rebels toppled Bashar al-Assad, who became known as one of the world's most brutal despots.
Since then the U.S. and Syria have cooperated on anti-terrorism actions, which Trump indicated will be useful in the response to Saturday's killings.
