As winter sets in, Minnesota households are preparing for higher heating costs. Rising natural gas and electricity prices, combined with colder-than-average temperatures, are expected to drive up bills this season, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association.
What Protections Exist
The state’s Cold Weather Rule, which continues in effect through April 30, protects residential gas and electric customers from winter disconnections if they set up payment plans. Income-eligible households may also be limited to paying no more than 10 percent of monthly income toward heating bills. The rule does not apply to delivered fuels such as propane, fuel oil or wood. Residents are encouraged to contact their fuel providers about budget plans or other payment options.
