MIKE Wallace’s fine letter of December 9 (Clear commitment to act on electoral mandate for indy is needed) is almost correct, but not quite, and its one deficiency is not unimportant.

He sees the lack of Holyrood ’s power to legislate for an indyref, as against the Scottish people’s wish for such a vote (which we accept, for argument), as a “clash of Scottish popular sovereignty and English “Crown in Parliament” sovereignty”. But that would only be true if there was no other way, within our own hands, of taking the vote, whereas there certainly is one – namely any UK general election, which could easily be made into a plebiscite on independence by simple manifesto of any party or parties standing throughout Scotland, and seeking a headcount majority of votes on a promise to take Scotlan
