Hockey’s Canada’s blueprint for building women’s and girls’ hockey includes 14 recommendations for change but the one likely to cause the most fireworks falls under the innocuous sounding “standardize regional delivery of girls hockey.”

In Ontario, that means confronting the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, which has promoted and governed female hockey since 1975, instead of leaving the job to an overarching provincial hockey association as it’s done in other provinces.

The OWHA, which has the greatest number of female players in the country, “has been critical to the growth of the women’s and girls’ game for over 50 years and should be congratulated for its pioneering to build the sport,” states the Rise as One report released Saturday.
