EDMONTON — More women and girls are playing hockey in Canada every year, but the country’s governing body of the sport says it still isn’t enough.
Female hockey registration in Canada has risen year over year to 115,000 last season.
Hockey Canada’s goal is 170,000 by 2030.
There are more women and girls coaching and officiating too, but Hockey Canada says all that amounts to less than 20 per cent of its total registration.
Hockey Canada has announced 14 recommendations to grow women and girls in hockey.
Among them, a salaried employee in each provincial association dedicated to women’s and girls hockey, equitable access to ice time and facilities and finding new revenue to support women and girls in the sport.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 13, 2025.
