It was 1986 when John Barker says he and his Scouts troop first started helping distribute Salvation Army toy and food hampers for Christmas.
At the time, about 10 Scout troops helped take packages to people in need around Sarnia, said the 23rd Sarnia Scouts leader.

The number of Scout troops in the city has since diminished, but he and the 23rd have been coming back every year, he said.
“They’re seeing they’re having an impact on their own community,” Barker said Saturday, the 40th anniversary of the troop’s involvement.
“It’s something that they can do.”
Most of the troop’s 25 youngsters and 11 leaders were helping Saturday make about 50 deliveries of potatoes, apples, onions, bread, carrots, and either a ham or turkey to people’s doors, he said.
