The NCHSAA 3A state championship football game on Saturday , Dec. 13, in Durham County Stadium between Shelby and Kinston quickly turned into an offensive display, and it didn't slow down.
Near the end of the third quarter, Shelby took a 77-41 lead to trigger the running clock, and the teams had already combined for 118 points — setting an NCHSAA record for most combined points in a football state championship game.
Not since Raleigh High School's 117-0 win over Asheville in 1914 has a championship game seen so many points.
Kinston receiver and NC State commit Tyreek Copper also set a few individual records in the game, beating Sage Surratt's previous record of 2,104 receiving yards in a season and Mohamed Massaquoi's 32 touchdown catches.
