JOHNSTON, Iowa -- (Iowa State Capital Bureau) -- The five Iowa National Guard soldiers ambushed Saturday in Syria were among an estimated 250 serving in that country, Iowa Army National Guard Major General Stephen Osborn said Saturday evening during a news conference at Camp Dodge in Johnston.

Two Iowa National Guard soldiers and a civilian interpreter (not from Iowa) who was assisting them.
Injured -- 3
Three Iowa National Guard soldiers
Severity of injuries
One had “superficial” injuries, according to Maj. Gen. Osborn, and two had “significant” injuries.

Maj. Gen. Osborn said the soldiers were performing counterterrorism duties.
