Chocolate, grapes and even lilies are well-documented hazards for dogs. However, there's another potential danger that is often overlooked, and it's strewn across our roads.

The RSPCA has identified rock salt - a gritty compound typically used to de-ice roads and paths during frosty weather - as the threat. While it effectively transforms snow and ice into slush, it can act as a 'common winter poison' for dogs, potentially causing distressing symptoms if consumed.

"It’s difficult to say how much needs to be eaten for signs of toxicity to be seen, even a small amount of pure salt can be very dangerous," the RSPCA explains online .
