1888: The Princes Bridge was officially opened to traffic, coinciding with the second International Expo held in Melbourne. The Princes Bridge spans the Yarra River and connects Swanston Street on the north bank of the Yarra River to St Kilda Road on the south bank, carrying road, tram and pedestrian traffic. The bridge was also listed on the Victorian Heritage List.


1914: Jim Cairns, deputy prime minister in the Whitlam government, was born in Carlton. He was best known as a leader of the movement against Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. He was also an economist and a prolific writer on economic and social issues, and in retirement he self-published and self-marketed many of his works from stalls he ran around Australia.


1935: Sydney Luna Park was officially open. Luna Park Sydney is a heritage-listed amusement park located at 1 Olympic Avenue, Milsons Point, New South Wales, Australia, on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. It is one of Sydney's most famous landmarks and has had a significant cultural impact over the years, including being the filming location for several movies and TV shows.


1935: The 2.8-kilometer dual-lane Hornibrook Highway has opened, allowing faster access to the Redcliffe Peninsula. This bridge is still the longest road bridge in Australia. When the river flows through the bridge, there is only an arch in the center, and fishing boats can pass under the bridge. The bridge's condition deteriorated over the years, necessitating the construction of a new bridge, and a three-lane bridge, the Houghton Highway opened in 1979.


2022: The Reserve Bank of Australia raised the cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.6%. The increase was only half the size of most forecasters, sending the Australian dollar down around half a cent to around 64.6 US cents. Stocks rose, posting their best daily gain in more than two years, rising about 3.8%. The measures were aimed at keeping inflation in check before it rises to levels that plague other economies.
