
1906: In 1905, the Colonial Office recommended that New South Wales apply for a state emblem. New South Wales Governor Joseph Carruthers commissioned New South Wales government printer William Applegate Gulick to produce several designs, drawing on symbols already used in the state's coat of arms. The final design was granted a Royal Warrant by King Edward VII on 11 October 1906.
1930: Collingwood Football Club won the 1930 Victorian Football League Grand Final by 30 points, becoming champions that season. This was the club's ninth championship and fourth consecutive championship. As of 2023, Collingwood are the only team in VFL/AFL history to win four consecutive championships.
1935: John Latham was appointed the fifth Chief Justice of Australia. While serving as Chief Justice, Latham frequently provided unsolicited advice on political matters to several prime ministers and other senior government figures. During World War II, he made numerous recommendations on defense and foreign policy. Latham was also one of only eight High Court judges to have served in the Australian Parliament before being appointed to the bench.
2004: Test cricketer Keith Miller died aged 84 in Melbourne. He was given a state funeral by the Victorian government, with hundreds of mourners standing outside a packed cathedral and broadcast live to the nation on ABC Radio. On Australia Day 2005, he was awarded an Order of Australia in recognition of his "service as a player, The contribution of journalists and commentators to sport, particularly cricket”.
2023: New South Wales was set to enshrine a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and a target for net zero emissions into law, with an independent advisory group set up to monitor the state's progress. The Mings government would introduce its core climate change bill to the NSW parliament on October 12 to consolidate targets, establish a net zero commission and fulfill two election promises.
