1965: Canberra's first two sets of traffic lights came into use on 23 October 1965, while Sydney's first set of traffic lights was installed in 1933, thirty years ago. The Canberra signals were located at the junction of Northbourne Avenue and the London Circuit and the junction of Northbourne Avenue and Cooyong Street.


1976: On October 23, 1976, Australia was in the path of a total solar eclipse, which spanned the southern half of the continent. The path of the total solar eclipse would be very close to the capitals of Adelaide and Sydney. Solar eclipses rarely passed over densely populated cities, but Australia's second-largest city, Melbourne, was right in the path of totality.


1978: Melbourne Victory footballer Archie Thompson was born in New Zealand. He currently serves as a club ambassador for Melbourne Victory Football Club. Thompson made over 50 appearances for Australia, scoring 28 goals. He holds the record for goals in a single international game, scoring 13 goals in a 2001 match against American Samoa in a 31-0 victory.


2022: Flood warnings have been issued for Australia's eastern states, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning that Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania could experience flooding again. The Bureau of Meteorology said low-pressure systems near South Australia and the New South Wales-Queensland border were combining with a high-pressure system near New Zealand to channel moist tropical air across eastern Australia.


2023: US technology companies and Anthony Albanese released a joint statement pledging to improve Australia's ability to identify and prevent cyber threats. Microsoft said it will invest an additional $5 billion in Australia over the next two years to expand hyperscale cloud computing capabilities, while working with the Australian Signals Directorate to strengthen domestic protection against cyber threats.
