
1942:Western Australian politician Bertie Johnston died. He served as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for Williams-Narrogin from 1911 to 1928. His resignation from the Australian Labor Party in 1915 led to the collapse of John Scaddan's Labor government in Western Australia. He served as a senator from 1929 to 1942, but sadly died on 6 September 1942 at Black Rock, Melbourne, Victoria.
1990:The Royal Australian Navy began participating in Operation Damask in the 1991 Gulf War. Operation Damask officially began on September 6, and HMS Success began replenishment operations on September 7. During Operation Damask, the task force interrogated up to 30 merchant ships and aircraft daily regarding their origin, destination and cargo, and conducted naval boarding operations.
1997:The first Saturday edition of The Australian Financial Review was published. Founded on 16 August 1951, the Australian Financial Review is a six-day-a-week newspaper published by Fairfax Media, one of Australia and New Zealand's largest media companies. The publication aims to provide an independent source of business, investment, financial and political news.
2022:Amid heightened concerns about inflation, the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision raised the cash rate to its highest level since 2015 and raised the official interest rate to 2.35%. This is the fifth consecutive month that the benchmark rate has been raised to 2.35%. It is also Australia's fastest-growing borrowing costs in nearly three decades.
2023:The New South Wales government will increase coal royalties by 2.6 percentage points from next July, Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said will inject $2.7 billion into state coffers over four years. Treasury estimates the changes could result in an average increase of $5.80 on a household's annual electricity bill. This policy will go into effect on July 1, 2024.
