
1914:The Australian submarine AE1 sank near what is now East New Britain Island in Papua New Guinea while patrolling New Britain Island, and all 35 crew members on board were missing. Search missions to try to find the wreck began in 1976. The submarine was discovered during Search Mission 13 near the Duke of York Islands in December 2017.
1931:Australia's most iconic painter Tom Roberts has died. He was a key member of the Heidelberg School art movement, also known as Australian Impressionism. And he was the first to push for Australia to have its own National Portrait Gallery. In 1903 he completed the commissioned work The Big Picture, the most famous visual representation of the first Australian Parliament.
2022:A 36-year-old Colombian woman missing for five days in remote northern Queensland rainforest has been found. Missing woman Juliana Castrillon went missing after she embarked on a 14km solo hike after attending an unofficial rainforest party south of Cooktown. On September 14, SES volunteers discovered Castrillon was still alive. Castrillon was subsequently transported to the autonomous region for medical evaluation.
2023:The Coalition has been accused of trying to throw the ACT government back to the 1950s over its attack on the ACT's drug decriminalization plan. Greens senator David Shoebridge said this was because the Coalition was concerned the ACT's successful drug decriminalization scheme could be replicated in other states and territories.
2023:Two rallies were held in Sydney over the future of water security, with farmers and traditional owners from northern NSW protesting the proposed Hunter Gas Pipeline and farmers from southern NSW marching against the proposed Murray-Darling Basin Water buyback program. About 1,000 demonstrators marched to the door of Santos' Sydney office to hand over a letter calling for an end to a $3.6 billion gas project in western New South Wales.
