1932: Maude Bonney became the first woman to travel around Australia. Maud Bonny was an Australian pilot born in South Africa. She was also the first woman to fly solo from Australia to the UK. Griffith University in Queensland awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her contribution to aviation. In 2012, she was inducted into the Australian Aviation Hall of Fame.
1949: Former NSW Labor politician Graham Richardson was born in Sydney. He served as secretary-general of the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales) from 1976 to 1983, as a New South Wales senator from 1983 to 1994, and as a cabinet minister in the Hawke and Keating governments. After retiring from politics, Richardson became a political commentator for Sky News Australia.
1975: Australian politician and New South Wales Premier Jack Long has died in Auburn aged 98. The requiem mass and memorial service outside St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney were packed with seats and crowds. Prominent Labor leaders, including the then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, attended his funeral. He was buried at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney.
2020: Former Australian Labor Party pioneer Senator Susan Ryan passed away on September 27.
