ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- There has been a decrease in drug-related deaths in New York, per the Centers for Disease Control's preliminary figures from 2024. The CDC found that overdose deaths dropped 32% from 2023 to 2024.

About 4,567 New Yorkers had a fatal drug overdose in 2024, while 6,688 had one in 2023. The CDC attributes about 77% of these deaths to opioid use, like heroin or fentanyl.

The state has implemented many programs to contribute to the decline in overdose deaths, including securing funding for efforts to increase medication for addiction, providing links for high-risk people to outreach and referral programs, and funding recovery centers.
