ALBANY — Deaths from drug overdoses declined by 32% within New York state in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
An estimated 4,567 New Yorkers died of drug overdoses in 2024, compared to 6,688 in 2023. Approximately 77% of deaths involved opioids, such as heroin or fentanyl. The latest CDC findings were announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
