TACOMA, Wash. — Former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to one count of second-degree assault in connection to a 2023 shooting at the Tacoma Mall .
The plea came as the trial got underway on Tuesday prior to jury selection. The charge Kemp pleaded guilty to is lesser than the first-degree assault charge he was facing at trial.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 22, according to the Pierce County Prosecutors Office.
A statement from Kemp's lawyer says he is "committed to moving forward in a positive direction."
"The Pierce County Prosecutor's Office presented him with an offer that allowed him to take responsibility, but also recognized the self-defense aspects of how this incident transpired," the statement reads, in part.
Kemp was accused of partic
