LONDON -- A wave of Russian drone strikes across Ukraine has resulted in at least seven fatalities and 27 injuries overnight into Tuesday, according to local officials. The Ukrainian air force reported that 112 Russian drones were launched into the country, with 75 either shot down or neutralized during flight. Impacts were recorded in 11 locations nationwide.
The majority of casualties occurred in two northeastern regions near the front lines. In the city of Sumy, three people were killed and 20 injured due to a Russian cluster rocket attack. Local authorities reported that at least five rockets struck open areas in the city center, including a busy road filled with morning commuters. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a "savage strike" and a "fully deliberate attack on civilians."
In the Kharkiv region, another three people were killed and six injured from Russian shelling, while one person died and 13 were injured in the southern Kherson region, according to Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the local military administration. Additionally, five people were injured in the northern city of Chernihiv and five more in Odesa on the southern Black Sea coast.
In a Tuesday morning address, Zelenskyy stated that the ongoing Russian attacks demonstrate that President Vladimir Putin has no real interest in peace, despite the Kremlin's involvement in U.S.-brokered negotiations aimed at ending the three-year invasion. Ukrainian and Russian representatives met in Istanbul, Turkey, on Monday for a second round of direct talks, following their first meeting in May.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for global pressure, stating, "Without decisive actions from the United States, Europe, and everyone in the world who has the power -- Putin will not agree even to a ceasefire." He lamented that every day brings new casualties due to Russian aggression, calling for tougher sanctions and increased support for Ukraine's defense.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has also launched its own long-range strike campaign into Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its forces downed eight Ukrainian drones on Monday night into Tuesday morning. This comes after a covert operation by Ukraine on Sunday, where drones concealed in trucks targeted at least five airfields deep within Russian territory.
Zelenskyy described the operation as a "strategic operation" that reduces Russia's military potential. He stated, "Unless they will stop, we will continue." When asked about the involvement of the Trump administration, Zelenskyy expressed a desire for stronger actions to support sanctions and pressure Putin to cease hostilities, or at least to initiate a ceasefire.
