Officials with Sioux Falls-based hospital systems say they're watching closely as the number of confirmed measles cases in the United States continues to rise to their highest levels since 2019.

And with one case now confirmed in South Dakota, officials are also emphasizing that it's never too late to get vaccinated against the extremely contagious disease.

Centers for Disease Control data shows there are currently 1,088 confirmed cases in the country as of May 29. That is already the highest number of cases since 2019, and the second-highest number of cases since 1992.

That number doesn't include the Meade County adult who was confirmed June 2 by the South Dakota Department of Health to have measles.
