MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- New York City could be establishing a task force to develop affordable housing on Wards Island, a new bill hitting the city council floor shows.

The proposal, sponsored by councilmember Gale Brewer seeks to create a team of 11 who would study the feasibility of building affordable housing on Wards Island.

The area currently serves as a 255-acre park conjoined to Randall's Island, at the northern end of the East River, between Manhattan and Queens.

According to the proposal, the task force would consist of commissioners from parks and recreation, health and mental hygiene, environmental protection, housing preservation and development and the chancellor of the city school district.
