Hackers stole data on 40,000 people during recent Lee Enterprises cyberattack

Data from about 40,000 people was stolen by hackers during a February cyberattack on Lee Enterprises, which owns five newspapers in Montana.

The Iowa-based media company said the data breach included first and last names, as well as Social Security numbers.

Lee said in a report to the Maine Attorney General's Office that 39,779 individuals, including employees and customers, were affected by the Feb. 3 data breach. In that letter, Lee told officials "upon discovering the event, Lee moved quickly to investigate and respond to the event, assess the security of its network, and identify potentially affected individuals."

According to Lee spokesperson Tracy Rouch, those impacted by the breach will be notified via mail.
