GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - If you’ve received a suspicious text appearing to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles, you might want to double check it, but you wouldn’t be the only one.
“I get them on a random basis, twice, three times a day,” Pitt County resident Travis Parker says. “It’ll pop up on my phone, and it won’t be a phone number. It’ll be a code, like 45609, or something like that.”
A code, he says, or a strange email address.
The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Lee Darnell, says scammers are always trying new tactics and often pretend to be an entity you trust.
“Most common ones we see right now are the DMV, the unpaid tolls, and jury scams, saying, you missed jury duty, we’re gonna have to take you to jail unless you pay,” Darnell says.
