The Dutch government announced the country will hold snap elections on 29 October after Geert Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom pulled its support for Prime Minister Dick Schoof’s government.
Less than a year in office, the government fell when Wilders demanded that his coalition partners sign a sweeping 10-point anti-migration plan or risk the cabinet's end.
The proposal called for sealing the borders with military patrols, rejecting all asylum-seekers at entry points, suspending family reunification for recognised refugees, and deporting Syrians on temporary visas.
When leaders refused to sign the plan on Tuesday, Wilders announced that he would withdraw his party's ministers from the government.
