JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Rural Crimes Investigative Unit and the Livestock and Farm Protection Task Force are investigating false reports of New World Screwworm in Missouri.

According to the news release, the two groups are working with Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey.

The release says a fake press release was sent to a northwest Missouri radio station on May 27. The information was quickly discovered to be false, but not before igniting animal health concerns, market scare and damaging consumer trust.

On May 28 Bailey and Department of Agriculture Director Chris Chinn requested the investigation to discover the culprit and determine if this was an act with malicious intent to cause panic in agricultural markets.
