The Golden Valley High School community was taken by surprise Thursday night when head football coach James Cain announced on Facebook that he would no longer be leading the team.
Cain, who has been coaching at the local high school for seven years, clarified his departure, saying, "I want to make it clear I did not quit on the team nor was I fired. Unfortunately, there are rules in place that prioritize teachers when it comes to coaching positions within KHSD."
The Kern High School District (KHSD) policy gives credentialed teachers priority for coaching jobs over non-credentialed teachers. Cain, who worked at the school but was not a credentialed teacher, faced this rule, meaning his job was open for hire each year.
