(WJW) - The U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisory for Mexico this week, urging Americans to "exercise increased caution" when visiting the country.

According to federal officials, the Level 2 advisory was issued due to terrorism, crime and kidnapping risks.

"Many violent crimes take place in Mexico. They include homicide kidnapping, carjacking and robbery," the advisory states. "There is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Mexico."

The advisory goes on to say that U.S. government officials aren't allowed to travel to some high-risk areas, making it difficult to help travelers.

The Department of State warned that emergency services are also limited or sometimes unavailable in remote or rural regions of the country.
