TEXAS, USA — A federal judge in San Antonio will hear arguments Friday on whether to block a new Texas law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 10 into law in late June. The measure, set to take effect Sept. 1, mandates that each classroom display a “durable poster” or framed copy of the Protestant version of the Ten Commandments.
The display must measure at least 16 inches wide by 20 inches tall, be easily visible from anywhere in a classroom and contain no other text. Schools may use privately donated posters that meet the requirements or they can purchase them using district funds.
Some school officials have expressed concerns about inclusivity.
