The second group of homeowners are now able to apply for My Safe Florida Home, a popular home-hardening grant program that could help residents cut property-insurance costs.

As of Monday, low-income homeowners of any age can apply for the grants of up to $10,000 to help residents make storm-related upgrades. Low-income means the total household income is at or below 80% of the median income for their county of residence.

Applications open at 8 a.m. and will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and in tiers:

Starting Aug. 4: Low-income homeowners age 60+

Starting Aug. 18: Low-income homeowners

Starting Sept. 1: Moderate-income homeowners age 60+

Starting Sept. 15: Moderate-income homeowners

The Florida Legislature has allocated $280 million in funding for the program.
