MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -Getting good sleep for students plays a crucial role in starting off a new school on the right foot.

At least two weeks out from the first day of school, pediatricians recommend shifting from your summer bedtime routine into a more consistent school ready sleep schedule.

“Not just the night before because sleep is dependent on the sleep you got yesterday and day before that so building on good habits can be really helpful,” said Dr. Casey Freymiller, a UW Health Kids pediatrician.

The rule of thumb is that 10-year-olds should be getting on average 10 hours of sleep. Younger minds should be getting 11-12 hours and for teens; they should be getting at least nine hours of sleep each night.
