FRANKFORT, Ky. (WEVV) — Madisonville North Hopkins High School claimed victory in the inaugural Best School Garden Salsa Challenge at the Kentucky State Fair, according to Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell.
"What’s not to love about salsa?!" Shell said. "But more important than the delicious, fresh recipes these students made, are the lessons they learned."
The competition launched this fall's All in for Ag Education Week, a collaboration between the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, the Lieutenant Governor's Office, and the Kentucky Department of Education.
Schools statewide were invited to grow their own salsa ingredients, create an original recipe, and present it at the fair. Most ingredients were grown by students, with some sourced locally.
