PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- For almost two months, Providence police have been tapping into surveillance cameras, and even officer body-worn camera, in real-time to respond to incidents across the city.
In early July, the department launched its Real Time Crime Center after U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, a member of the Appropriations Committee, secured a $1 million earmark in fiscal year 2023 to fully fund the project.
The hub, located inside the department's Investigative Bureau’s Major Crimes Unit, integrates city security cameras, Flock license plate readers, body-worn cameras, and 911 call data.
