NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – College savings accounts will be opened for thousands of Newark kindergarteners this year, officials announced Wednesday.
Accounts will be gifted to 3,000 incoming kindergarten students at Newark Public Schools by June 2026, officials said. Each student will get a 529 plan with a $25 starting deposit.
Then, students will be able to win “incentive deposits” with attendance, good grades, community service and family participation at parent-teacher conferences, according to the program's website.
For the families with new college savings accounts, the district will host financial literacy workshops and college planning sessions at all of its elementary schools.
