As Hurricane Erin and the flooding it will bring drew closer Wednesday, Jamestown Rediscovery officials worked fast to protect the historic site.
The site – the first permanent English settlement in North America – is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise and more violent storms. Jamestown was declared as one of the 11 most endangered historic sites by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2022.
Sean Romo, Jamestown Rediscovery’s director of archaeology, said there’s little that can be done to prevent flooding at the sites.
“But, our team has prepped lots and lots of sandbags and we’ll use them to strategically support the walls of excavation units, so the units – and the archaeological data within – are not damaged or destroyed,” Romo said.
