Dallas Fire-Rescue says a pilot program to provide emergency blood transfusions has already saved 18 lives in just under six months, including a Dallas physician who says DFR’s quick action saved her life.

Kate Krause, an emergency medicine physician, shared with the Dallas City Council this week how a postpartum hemorrhage nearly ended her life on March 30, just weeks after delivering her daughter.

“Within just minutes, a pool of blood five feet across had spread beneath me,” Krause said. “I very nearly died that day.”

Dallas-Fire Rescue launched the program in February , enabling blood transfusions on ambulances before patients arrive at a hospital.
