Texas may be just days away from replacing the STAAR test, the controversial end-of-year exam for public school students. A deal fell through in the spring at the state capitol, but this summer, lawmakers are back in a special session.

“It looks like we’re very close to the end on replacing the STAAR test," said Sen. Paul Bettencourt on the Senate floor Wednesday night.

That night, the Texas Senate passed House Bill 8, which will change the end-of-year STAAR test into three smaller tests administered throughout the year. Results will be provided to teachers and students within 48 hours.
