Ifell in love with my ex through his daily voice notes, warm and slightly meandering, delivered in a deep baritone. We texted and talked on the phone, but the voice notes felt especially intimate. I loved waking up to one of his notes, slipping on my earbuds, and experiencing the sensation of him speaking into my ears. After years of texting with the people I was dating (with the occasional phone call thrown in), these daily messages felt tender, personal, and made just for us.
This experience reminded me how much the medium of communication matters almost as much as what we say. Between calls, texting, DMs, and voice notes, how we use technology can build intimacy or quietly create distance.
