FULTONDALE, Ala. —

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is bolstering its ranks with 10 new deputies joining the force as part of a graduating class of 35 law enforcement officers recognized Friday morning in Fultondale.

For one of the new deputies, Xander Stewart, the badge carries a deeper meaning as he follows in his uncle's footsteps.

Stewart said he is joining the force to strengthen family ties and is encouraging others to consider the call to serve as well.

"It's one of the best opportunities you could have in a lifetime, I will say that," Stewart said. "So if you want in, talk to your local sheriff, talk with your local department. Get your foot in the door and see what happens."
