On this date in 1921, thousands of seagulls mysteriously appeared in McLean County, devouring grasshoppers and saving crops in a phenomenon likened to the historic “miracle of the gulls” in Utah.

Mandan, N. D., Aug. 25 —
Thousands upon thousands of seagulls, suddenly appearing from no one knows where, are repeating the miracle of Brigham Young's days in Utah, in the district east of Washburn, McLean County, hundreds of miles from tidewater.
Swarm after swarm of gulls are cleaning out the grasshoppers which, in this area, did more than the dry weather and hot winds to wipe out crops.
Fields are literally white with the birds, according to W. A. Lanterman of Mandan, who returned this morning and reported the phenomena.
