Residents lately have approached Mesa City Council asking that it sever the agreement the Police Department has with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

At issue is the 287 (g) program, where state and local law enforcement partner with ICE to enforce federal immigration laws.

For over a decade, police have operated under the jail enforcement model, one of three in the program.

People who are arrested and taken to a holding facility are asked their immigration status. If they are in the country illegally, Mesa Police report that to ICE.
