ALLEGANY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- A Cumberland man was taken into custody after he was accused of starting a fire near the Board of Education maintenance building on the Fourth of July.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) announced on Aug. 24 that 30-year-old Michael Butler was arrested by state troopers and charged with malicious destruction of property over $1,000.

Just after noon on July 4, Cumberland firefighters and police officers were dispatched to a fire at 211 Market Street. This is where the Board of Education's maintenance building is located.

Firefighters were able to control the blaze before it spread to the building, limiting the damage to about $1,000. Fire marshal investigators reviewed security surveillance footage, which allegedly showed Bulter entering the
