SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities have identified the human remains discovered in a Springfield creek in early July.

On July 4, a decomposed human leg was found in Sulphur Fork Creek near North Main Street. The remains were handed over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for further DNA analysis.

On Aug. 13, a preliminary forensic DNA examination by the TBI identified the remains as 68-year-old Joseph Frank Benton.

Springfield officials said the investigation is now being led by the Robertson County Sheriff's Office and the 19th Judicial District Attorney's Office. The District Attorney's Office said the circumstances of Benton's death remain under investigation. No additional information was immediately released.
