Lil Nas X has been released from jail on bail after pleading not guilty to felony charges in Los Angeles.
The 26-year-old "Old Town Road" rapper, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, on Aug. 25 was released from Van Nuys jail in the county's San Fernando Valley after posting bond, court records show.
Earlier, he appeared in court for an arraignment and pleaded not guilty to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
During the arraignment, a judge set Lil Nas X's bail at $75,000 and said the singer must attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Lil Nas X for comment.
"Attacking police officers is more than just a crime against those individuals but a direct threat to public safety," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. "Anyone who assaults law enforcement will face serious consequences, no matter who they are or how famous they may be."
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 15.
Why was Lil Nas X arrested?
The rapper was arrested on Thursday, Aug. 21, just after 6 a.m., Los Angeles Sheriff's Department inmate records show. In a previous statement to USA TODAY, Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department said that officers responded that morning to "a nude man walking in the street" on Ventura Boulevard.
"Upon arrival, the suspect charged at officers and was taken into custody," the LAPD said. "He was transported to a local hospital for a possible overdose and placed under arrest for Battery on a Police Officer." Madison later confirmed the incident was related to Lil Nas X's arrest.
According to the DA's office, "Upon arrival, he is accused of assaulting the responding officers trying to take him into custody, injuring at least three of them." If convicted of the four felony charges, Lil Nas X faces up to five years in California prison.
Police said they believed Lil Nas X was using drugs during the incident. But his attorney, Christy O'Connor, said in court that he was not using illegal drugs and described the episode as an aberration for the artist.
Lil Nas X, who has been nominated for 11 Grammy awards and won two, achieved his breakthrough in 2018 with the wildly popular song "Old Town Road," and he released his debut studio album, "Montero," in 2021. His EP "Days Before Dreamboy" debuted in March, and his second studio album, "Dreamboy," is expected to be released later this year.
