PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An incoming Pearl District homeless shelter that has been opposed by residents of the neighborhood will open its doors next week.
On Monday, Portland officials revealed the NW Northrup Shelter — located on 1435 NW Northrup Street — is set to open on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The Salvation Army will run the emergency facility that will operate from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to provide the local homeless community with another place to sleep overnight.
“NW Northrup plays an important role in our goal to provide a lifesaving bed for every person, every night,” Mayor Keith Wilson said in a statement. “We're building a system where every door is a right door, restoring pathways to treatment, housing, and community livability for all of Portland.”
