In a surprising announcement, Howard University President Ben Vinson III, 55, will leave his position as Howard University’s 18th President. Vinson’s departure comes at a usual time: The start of the academic year. “We understand that this news may be surprising to some, coming at the start of the academic year,” said Leslie Hale, Howard University Board of Trustees chair, on a video posted on Howard University’s website. A statement on Howard’s website posted before the news of Vinson’s departure reads, “As we stand on the threshold of this new academic year, I am filled with optimism and hope for what lies ahead.
