(KRON) — The bed of a dump truck was completely severed from its vehicle on Highway 1 near Aptos early Monday morning after the driver crashed into the Freedom Boulevard overpass.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the northbound side of Highway 1 was shut down for more than four hours, causing heavy traffic in the area. Photos of the crash show the truck bed wedged between the highway and an overhanging road sign, badly mangled from the impact.

“This incident is a crucial reminder of the importance of regular vehicle inspections,” CHP said. “... Drive safe and be vigilant, everyone.”
